life for the working person. The culture, values, and socialization of the country changed dramatically during the transition between two great historical eras, Victorian to Industrial, just as the culture
of our world today is changing as a result of computerization and a global economy. Todays population struggles with the ongoing advances in communication, manufacturing, and even entertainment technology but
even all that has changed in the last ten to twenty years does not compare to the cultural and social effects of the beginnings of the industrialized society.
Imagine a society where members of the population were close-knit, family members living near each other, some never traveling more than a few miles from
their home-base, maintaining traditional family values of hard work and strong religious beliefs. In fact, the values among all members of the country were more similar than dissimilar. True, a
class structure was clearly evident: aristocracy and the working class and the two did not intermingle except for the lower working classes to provide services to the higher wealth population.
It was a time of agriculture and hand-work, with people taking pride in their work and the items they could make by
hand through their own talents, then suddenly factories and mechanized tools were in place, taking the place of those who crafted their wares. These kinds of changes were astonishing to
the people of the day, to say the least. The result was confusion and anger but it also brought a new society as Thompson explains the time.
