checking their e-mail. At work, especially, e-mail has had some interesting impacts. And, like many technological innovations and tools, e-mail has its positive sides and not-so-positive side.
Speedier Communication On the positive end, e-mail has provided faster communication with another person. Going back to
our office of 30 years ago, getting a document from point A (the East Coast) to point B (the West Coast) used to take as long as the U.S. Postal
Service could deliver it. It was true that teletype machines (pre-fax) were a help -- but they were cumbersome as well. These days, however, a document can be fired between
the East Coast and the West Coast in a manner of seconds -- and around the rest of the world, for that matter.
And when it comes to information, there is little doubt that both e-mail and the Internet help keep people up-to-date both in their workplaces and on trends going on
in the outside world (Goldsborough 15). In one study, 35% of respondents said they used the Internet for news and information -- while at work (Goldsborough 15). E-mailing also makes
it easier for most people to stay in the loop and to communicate with one another (Goldsborough 15). At one conference
in which the effectiveness of e-mail was debated, some attendees noted that their use of e-mail ended up reducing the number of in-person meetings they needed to attend (Journal for
