law and passed the bar when he was just 19 years old. Five years later, he felt a call from God and began to preach in a small church but
subsequently preached in the Methodist Episcopal church. He was strongly influenced by John Wesley. It was the time of the Civil War but as a minister, Bounds would not
fight. He and others who refused to fight were held in a Union prison for a year-and-a-half. He then served as a chaplain for the Confederacy. He would subsequently transfer
to a church in Atlanta where he met his wife, had a family, continued to minister and became editor of the Methodist journal. He would later take the position of
associate editor for the Methodist Churchs weekly paper, the Christian Advocate. When he died in 1913, only two of his books had been published. The other nine were published post-mortem.
Bounds was a deep and firm believer in prayer. It is said that he himself prayed from 4:00 to 7:00 each morning. His love for God and for prayer come
through the text to the reader. One might wonder how so much can be written about prayer by one person but as the reader scans the text, there are hundreds
of gems to learn or remember. Strong believers pray and praise God no matter what although when life gets tough, it is hard for even the strongest believer to remember
to praise and thank God for all He has given us. Many people pray only when a tragedy strikes or when they want something. In Book 1: The Necessity
of Prayer, Bounds says this: "Prayer is not simply to get things from God, but to make those things holy, which already have been received by him" (Bounds, 2000, p.
