with some machinery and weaponry of WWII, such as U-Boats, but there are other pockets, so to speak, of the war wherein other machinery and weaponry existed and did not
get the same level of attention. In James Tents book "E-Boat Alert" we are offered up a, perhaps rare, look at one such piece of machinery or weaponry, the E-Boat.
The E-Boat and the threat they posed are not often known about and as such Tents book serves as a very good foundation for understanding and learning about the subject.
The following paper examines this book by Tent. E-Boat Alert As mentioned, this particular book is about the E-Boats in WWII. E-Boats were torpedo boats designed to do
nothing more than shoot torpedoes out at the Allies. It was a boat that apparently was only used in WWII and was called the Schnellboote by the Germans. The word
Schnell in German refers to fast and these boats were considered incredibly fast and high performance for their time period. Tent discusses many of the actions of the E-boats as
they set out against the Allies and it also discusses the Allies approach to hindering or stopping these E-boats which threatened any success the Allies may achieve. But, in addition,
the author also discusses the origins of the E-Boat, providing the reader with a deeper understanding of the Germans at war, Germans in military design, and the war itself. There
is a substantial amount of this background information, information that truly allows the reader to understand where the Germans were coming from and what they were capable of during this
time period. For this particular reader it was interesting to think of this E-boat in conjunction with the dirigible, also a short lived weapon of war for the Germans.
