wrote in 1941, he not only captures what a lake in Maine meant to his how childhood, but also he describes how taking his own son back to this lake
recast him in time, merging his identity with the role of his father. White begins by describing how, around 1904, his family rented a camp that was on a
"lake in Maine and took us all there for the month of August" (White). Whites family had such a pleasurable time that this became a family tradition, s they returned
"summer after summer" (White). As his son had never "had any fresh water up his nose," White was overcome with the urge to return to his locale and its good
memories. As this suggests, White immediately introduces the theme of time and ties his current trip to the lake in Maine, with its associations in his past. He writes,
"It is strange how much you can remember about places like that once you allow your mind to return into the grooves which lead back" (White). This statement transitions into
fond remembrances of what the lake was like during his childhood and how he would get up quietly, dress and "start out in the canoe," being carefully not to disturb
"the stillness of the cathedral" (White), which suggests the awe and wonder that the lakes beauty inspired in him. Naturally, White is worried that the lake will have changed, perhaps
