the mark, but not quite. Theyre not so much anti-family as scornful of the way TV has portrayed the American family since the early 50s. The American family as seen
on "The Donna Reed Show" and "Father Knows Best," even on the more recent "Cosby Show," were just too good to be true. Moms hair always looked great without ever
being in curlers. Dad never got angry and always had sage advice. The "Cosby Show," while being more contemporary, struck the viewing audience as being just as unrealistic. "Married With
Children" was the pendulum swinging in the other direction. The working title for "Married With Children" while it was under development was "Not the Cosbys." The whole idea behind its
creation was to create a satirical response to NBCs wholesome hit. (Bash 04D) On "Married..." the parents werent romantic with each other, and the kids never listened to adult wisdom.
Most American families could watch this show and feel like theyre doing pretty well by comparison as the Bundys demonstrated just about every form of dysfunction possible in
a family. These shows picture families that are so extreme in their behaviors that it can be argued that they actually enforce traditional family values by showing what not to
do. "With Ozzie and Harriet, everyone felt guilty," said Barbara Cadow, a psychologist at U.S.C. School of Medicine. "With these new programs, we see that were doing all right
by comparison." (Zoglin 85) An associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and an advisor on the "Cosby Show," Alvin Poussaint suggested that these programs provide an "outlet for
