is used in everyday conversation, every family is dysfunctional. That may be more true than not. No family is perfect and every family has problems. Furthermore, the entire concept of
family has changed as have methods of discipline. A dysfunctional family is formally defined as: a family in which conflict, misbehaviour [sic] and even abuse on the part
of individual members of the family occur continually, leading other members to accommodate such actions (Wikipedia, 2006). Lambert (2005) defined a family dysfunction as "any condition that interferes with
healthy family functioning." Lambert (2005) also said that any family may have periods of time when stressful events that interfere with normal functioning. The Counseling Center (2005) at the
University of Illinois provided the following examples of patterns that may be found in dysfunctional families: * One or both parents have addictions or compulsions, such as drugs, alcohol, promiscuity,
gambling, overworking, and/or overeating, that strongly influences other family members (Counseling Center, 2005). * One or both parents use the threat or application of physical violence as the primary means
of control. Children may have to witness violence, may be forced to participate in punishing siblings, or may live in fear of explosive outbursts (Counseling Center, 2005). * One or
both parents exploit the children and treat them as possessions whose primary purpose is to respond to the physical and/or emotional needs of adults, e.g., protecting a parent or cheering
up one who is depressed (Counseling Center, 2005). * One or both parents are unable to provide, or threaten to withdraw, financial or basic physical care for their children. Or,
one or both parents fail to provide their children with adequate emotional support (Counseling Center, 2005). * One or both parents exert a strong authoritarian control over the children. Often
