Discussion The discussion about team member roles is fairly general of necessity, because the kinds of teams assembled and the missions assigned to them vary from organization to organization. When
teams are formed, they go through five stages: forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning (Waruszynski, 2004). In the formative stage, team members are not unified in the least, but remain
a "collection of individuals," but in the "storming" stage, they begin to work out their various responsibilities (Waruszynski, 2004). In the "norming" stage, the various members will have taken on
their roles, allowing the "performing stage," which is the most productive, to begin (Waruszynksi, 2004). Finally, the group adjourns and reflects on what it has done (Waruszynski, 2004). This
five-step process clearly shows the importance of having clearly defined roles for the team members, so there is no misunderstanding of who is responsible for what. Team leaders are the
ones who will select team members and assign their roles; therefore, the selection process "should be aligned with individual career aspirations to ensure that the potential team member has a
desire to be on the team" (Waruszynski, 2004, p. 37). Roles should be assigned according to members skills, including "technical or functional expertise; problem-solving and decision-making skills; and interpersonal skills"
(Waruszynski, 2004, p. 37). Another source lists the role the team member plays, what that person is like, and their weaknesses. The first role is the "plant," a person who
is able to solve tough problems because he or she is unorthodox and imaginative (Assigning team roles, 2008). This persons weaknesses include ignoring incidentals and being so preoccupied they dont
