their homes, surrounded by their families, today, Americans seem to feel more comfortable with allowing hospitals and nursing homes to handle the mechanics of death. As a culture, we
prefer to look on death and dying in a purely scientific manner, as a purely medical event. However, this perspective ignores the cultural and humanistic side of this life occurrence.
Additionally, medical advancements have made a purely scientific view of death extremely difficult to accomplish. An examination of death and dying shows that it is not only a medical event,
but also a sociological occurrence that requires fine distinctions of ethical and moral consideration. In discussing death and dying, from a medical standpoint, first of all, there is considerable
controversy about what, precisely, constitutes death. Broyde (2001) argues that a legal determination of death refers to a point in time when a collection of living cells is no longer
considered to be entitled to the rights granted to human beings, rather than a medical determination that all biological life has ceased. Such fine distinctions are necessary as, otherwise, there
would be no point where it would be judged morally justified to harvest viable organs from donors (Browne, 1983). It often gives comfort to a family to know that someone
received life (a heart, kidney, liver, etc) because of a loved ones death. A definition of death as based on whether or not the there is brain function was first
