can involve many things, not the least of which is powerful and often subliminal stereotypes. Race affects many people in many ways, something that LeRoi Jones understood very well as
a literary artist during the tumultuous times of the Civil Rights. The following paper reviews his play "Dutchman" arguing that it is a very powerful play. The paper assumes that
this play is being seen for the first time, back in the 60s when it was written. Reactions and thoughts are discussed in this context. Dutchman This play
is relatively innocent in the beginning as a seemingly normal and perhaps ambitious young black man rides the train. There is a woman, a white woman, who seems kind enough
and is apparently attracted to the black man. When we first see this we likely see this woman as a white woman who finds the black man intriguing and different,
a sexual conquest perhaps, because he is black. This puts the audience in a position where we sense racism, but we sense it from more of an adventurous perspective, a
perspective that speaks of primal desires that go against (or perhaps even with) the society at the time. What truly makes this play captivating, and thus ensures that the audience
will sit and pay close attention, is the fact that the audience knows that this woman, Lula, has some motive in mind. It is the 1960s and white women do
not come on to black men like this, toying with them, unless they are planning something, in this case it just seems to be sexual. And, in all honesty, this
also makes us realize that the point, in the beginning, is not necessarily that she is white and he is black, in terms of her personal stability and motives. We
