Even though Durkheims theories regarding science and religion have come in for criticism from both scientific and religious theorists, it is still the case that
his ideas provide an interesting and credible way of looking not only at the way in which primitive religions influence, and underpin, their modern counterparts, but also at the way
that science and religion can be seen to have a number of elements in common.
A letter to Durkheim could therefore set out the main points of his theory and go on to extrapolate from them
ways in which they can be seen to be relevant to current modes of thinking related to different aspects of society. For instance, Durkheim takes as one of his basic
premises the concept that religion is rooted in the nature of things and that any system of belief which dos not have this grounding will not survive, since there will
be an innate resistance to it which destroys it.
