studies. Traditional hermeneutics is the interpretation of written texts in law, religion and literature. Biblical interpretation is one of the traditional uses for hermeneutics. Modern hermeneutics is musts broader and
even includes non-verbal forms of communication. Bauman coined a new term, sociological hermeneutics opposed to hermeneutic sociology (Jacobsen and Polder 2008, p. 4). This twist is very much like Buaman
who was very different than other sociologists such as Luhmann or Habermas, each of whom presented a theoretical system to the field. This is all part of his determination to
leave the old ideas (Bauman 1978, p. 10). His own philosophy and theories were definitely impacted by his life experiences. Born in Poland in 1925, the family fled to the
Soviet Union in 1939 when Stalin was the ruler. He joined the Polish Army when he was just 18. The family returned to Poland after the war. He joined the
Communist party and was devoted to building a better socialist society (Jacobsen and Polder 2008, p. 5). He conducted worker studies at the University of Manchester and the London
School of Economics. Those experiences would led to Durkheims perspective of sociological hermeneutics. They also led to his religious beliefs. He was Jew in Poland but they were able
