thousand years before the birth of Jesus Christ. Since Egypt is the birthplace of modern civilization, it comes as no surprise that some of the worlds most elaborate and
treasured artifacts originate from this region. In ancient Egypt, "Cosmetics had long been a staple of Egyptian life" (Stewart, 2001, p. 74). It was more than just a
womans beauty supplement. Both men and women used cosmetics for a variety of reasons. They were applied as moisturizers and as sunscreen (Stewart, 2001). They were also
used by both sexes in ritualistic celebrations honoring the god Horus, and for special occasions, men and women alike applied perfumed cosmetic ointments to their heads to wear at special
banquets, and the aromatics would fragrantly ooze into the Egyptian ornamental wigs (Stewart, 2001). Because cosmetics were such an important part of Egyptian life, they were stored in ornate
boxes for safekeeping. These cosmetic or make-up boxes were carved from the ivory of hippopotamus tusks and eventually found their way from Egypt to Sidon, which was the main
city of Phoenicia or what is now the regions of Syria and Lebanon (Collections: The Bronze Age 3200 B.C. - 1200 B.C., 2003). Because these boxes were so magnificent
and rare, they were often popular booty or war prizes claimed by Assyrian kings (Collections: The Bronze Age 3200 B.C. - 1200 B.C., 2003). By the Middle Bronze period from
2200-1570 B.C., bone inlays began to appear in these ivory boxes and were highly regarded as decorative items well into the Late Bronze Age (Abercrombie, 2003). The boxes from
the Late Bronze and into the Iron Age are more intricate than the earlier Egyptian cosmetic boxes and the workmanship of these ivory artifacts is truly remarkable (Abercrombie, 2003).
