In order to resolve this dichotomy, perhaps it is useful to look at the cultural mindset which not only permitted slavery, but found it acceptable, and the economic reasons which perpetrated the condition for so long. To the modern way of thinking, it seems unbelievable that the concept that one human being can own another should ever have been given credibility; however, when slaves were first brought to the newly-formed American colonies, the emphasis was on the need to wrest a living from the land by any means possible, and there was an element of deliberate blindness with regard to the notion that slaves might come from a ...
