why it is important, it is also an important part of the Strategic Plan 2015 (Thompson, 2011; Ghosh, 2011). When looking at the destination it is necessary to assess the
practical aspects of the area, including accessibility, facilities and the available resources and how they may satisfy the tourism and events needs. Dubai can be reached by air of
sea, for most international visitors Dubai International airport is likely to provide the most suitable point of entry. The airport is well developed, with two terminals, and direct flights
to most major international airports around the world with in excess of 6,000 flights a week, to more than 220 destinations and in 2011 handled 47.2 million passengers (Dubai Airports,
2011). Furthermore, airlines are making investments that will increase capacity, Qatar Airways is investing in double-decker Airbus A380s including some new first class features, for the other aircraft there will
be a focus on only business class and economy class cabins, in order to meet the needs of the current poor economic climate (Kippreport, 2011). The airport is also
a major aviation hub for the Middle East. The country also has extensive road links and a port, where cruise ships as well as container ships dock (CIA, 2011).
