Arab Emirates (UAE), China and the United States all share a common distinction: they are the locations of "the only three man-made objects that could be seen from space"
(Brief History, 2004). The object located in the UAE, of course, is the man-made harbor at Jebel Ali. The merger of Jebel Ali Port and Port Rashid in
1991 led to the Dubai Ports Authority (DPA) accomplishing the movement of more than one million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), attributable to a 50 percent increase in traffic at Jebel
Ali and a 10 percent increase at Port Rashid. The increase caused the Dubai Ports Authority to become the "sixteenth busiest container harbor in the world. Growth continued throughout
the nineties and by the year 2003 DPA handled 5.15 million TEUs, while the Jebel Ali Free Zone hosts more than 2,800 companies from over 100 countries" (Brief History, 2004).
Today, DPA not only is one of the largest ports in the world, it is also considered to be the best in the
Middle East (UAE: Dubai port wins prize for best port in the Middle East, 2003). Evolution of DPA When the port at Jebel
