Once I leave the Dual Recovery Anonymous program, these two forms of rehabilitation will be integral components in my quest to reach and ultimately maintain a healthy status, both mentally and physically. In my case where both mental illness and drug addiction is present, I have learned treatment often incorporates cognitive behavioral therapy. The concept of behavioral theories takes into consideration the history of cross-cultural psychology, in that it assesses culture as an "indispensable component in the understanding of human behavior" (Segall et al, 1998, p. 1101). Cognition refers to the process of knowing, which applies to a combination of judgment and awareness; as such, this psychological approach serves to alter my thought processes in order to redirect the ultimate outcome of those thoughts, effectively changing how I view a particular situation. Cognitive behavioral therapy - "focusing on current problems and anticipating future problems" (MacNeil, 2005, p. 23) - is only effective when the therapists attitude coincides with the rehabilitation process, a factor I already see happening with my current therapist. I have come to understand the extent to which mental illness reaches into the recesses of contemporary society as being both vast and far-reaching.
