This paper discusses the negative impact drugs have on teenagers. Discussion The problem of drug and alcohol abuse among teens and pre-teens is a serious one and its effects are
well-known. Drug and alcohol abuse can lead to serious problems including lower or failing grades, misbehavior in school, fighting, unwanted pregnancy, expulsion; not to mention addiction itself and possible arrest.
A young person who starts down this road has a very good chance of failing to achieve what he wants to do. And unfortunately, drugs are very prevalent in our
culture, easy to get, and, depending on the crowd the student runs with, may be considered "cool." A 2002 survey conducted by the University of Michigan found that "24.5%, 44.6%,
and 53.0% of 8th-, 10th-, and 12th-graders, respectively, had used any illicit drug in their lifetime" (Beckson 3). Among children in the 8th grade, "21.3% had been drunk, while 44.0%
and 61.6% of 10th- and 12th-graders, respectively, had been drunk at least once in their lives" (Beckson 3). Lifetime marijuana use "among 8th-, 10th-, and 12th-graders were 19.2%, 38.7%, and
47.8%" (Beckson 3). Thats startling: nearly half of all 12th-graders use pot. In addition, the survey found that "[I]n the previous 30 days, 21.5% of 12thgraders had used marijuana, 26.7%
had used cigarettes, and 30.3% had been drunk" (Beckson 3). Nine percent of 12th graders smoked more than a half-pack of cigarettes daily, and 3.5% of them drank daily: "28.6%
