to people. In this War on Drugs more and more people are incarcerated and sent into a system that was already seriously overcrowded. Yet, despite this fact, and the increasing
overpopulation of prisons and extended sentences for drug offenders, the War on Drugs continues, regardless if it is effective. And, the truth is that this War on Drugs has not
proved effective in the long run. Like Prohibition in the 20th century concerning banning alcohol, the War on Drugs does not stop people from using drugs. The following paper examines
how making War on Drugs, especially marijuana, is damaging and futile. Drugs and Prohibition Prohibition of alcohol in the earlier part of the 20th century proved very futile.
In fact one could well argue that more criminal activity became the norm because of prohibition and thus the government ultimately learned and repealed such ridiculous laws. But, at the
same time the lessons learned then are not being understood today in the War on Drugs. "Prohibition is an attempted cure that makes matters worse-for both the addict and the
rest of us" (Friedman, 1972). It clearly does not work to prohibit drugs and in all honesty what an adult desires to do with their life should be their choice
as long as they are not killing or harming people, as long as they are not damaging the life of other people. There is no real logical or constitutional reason
why drugs should be illegal for it has clearly not helped society by making them illegal. Many people would argue that the reason these laws are in place are to
primarily protect the youth of the nation. But, the youth, first and foremost, are not allowed to drink or smoke tobacco and yet they still do. "Forbidden fruit is attractive,
