Because a study of participation in ADARP requires an assessment of recidivism over time, threats to internal validity include: maturation, history, experimental mortality and compensatory treatment. In understanding
this view, it is imperative to consider the nature of assessments of internal validity based on the reliability of the study and the control for both internal and external variables.
In a study of outcomes over time, the researcher must demonstrate internal validity through an explicit statement of purpose and the use of an instrument that reflects consideration for
some of the variables that can influence the study of individuals which are not at all related to the treatment model. This is based on an assessment of reliability,
which refers to the accuracy and repeatability of the research finding. If two comparable studies lead to widely different conclusions, either their methodologies and findings are unreliable in some
important aspect, or the research hypothesis and method are invalid. A valid research method may not always produce any significant results, or it may confirm a null hypothesis, but if
conducted properly, a study using such a method should produce valid, reliable results. As a result, assessments of the subject population relative to the threats to internal validity are
an important component of any research design. The first threat to internal validity is maturation. When individuals participate ion a drug rehabilitation program (an ADAHRP), which requires
abstinence from drug and alcohol use, the time in this facility defines the baseline from which these individuals are studied. After release from the program, individuals will either continue
to follow the directives of the program or the choice to return to substance abuse. Though individuals may show success in refraining from substance abuse at 3 month, six
