case, but new trends have created a new way of thinking. Interestingly, it was Bill W. who began AA and started the twelve step notion that sparked a revolution in
substance abuse treatment. Yet, Bill W. was just another alcoholic and by no means a professional in the field. Still, todays counselors relish the model that has helped so many
substance abusers. It does seem that addiction is treatable, but to some extent, circumstances swoop in and make life difficult for the drug addicted. Many offenders get into trouble
with the law. This is inevitable. In fact, it is likely that many addicts or drug abusers do not get the help that they need. They are after all more
often than not, breaking the law, and so are busy hiding their addictions. Today, with stiff penalties for illegal drug use, inclusive of mandatory minimums, sometimes drug addicts find themselves
in a predicament. Do they enter treatment and take the consequences or go about evading the law? Usually, they do not have the choice. They are caught and immediately
punished. Throughout history, there have been several treatment models but today, there is more research in this field that should render a conclusion as to what is the best way
of going about treating drug addicted offenders. The important question is: What is the best treatment and/or punishment for drug addicted offenders? In sifting through different treatment methods,
it does appear that drug addicted offenders do improve when offered services through drug court than when they are provided with services while incarcerated. In other words, it seems
that drug addicts do better outside of the prison system. This theory coincides also with the notion that the prisons are not good places for rehabilitation, and they create more
