Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 3 page brief look at statins, which are a category of drug therapy that is frequently used to lower levels of blood cholesterol (Statins, 2004). Because statin drugs are so effective as a drug therapy, they are extremely beneficial in promoting positive patient outcomes since the action of the statin drug helps to clear the bloodstream so that fatty deposits (plaque) will not build up on arterial walls, causing myocardial infarction or stroke. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

they are extremely beneficial in promoting positive patient outcomes since the action of the statin drug helps to clear the bloodstream so that fatty deposits (plaque) will not build up
on arterial walls, causing myocardial infarction or stroke. Some commonly prescribed statins are atorvastatin, fluvastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin, and simvastatin, which are marketed under various brand names. Statins lower cholesterol
by inhibiting the enzyme in the liver that produces body cholesterol (Statins, 2004). By blocking the action of this enzyme, the bodys low-density lipoprotein (LDL) receptors are stimulated and this
aids in clearing the bloodstream of cholesterol. Empirical research studies verify the efficacy of statin therapy. A 5-year large cohort study conducted by Collins, et al, indicated that diabetics
who take a statin drug each day may lower their risk of developing a myocardial infarction or a stroke by as much as 25 percent (Statins cut, 2003). The participants
took either 40 mg of simvastatin (brandname Zocor) or a placebo. The researchers assert that any of the statin drugs would likely produce a similar results (Statins, cut, 2003).
Statins have also been shown to be effective and safe when prescribed for children and adolescents. Worldwide, one out of every 500 children inherit hypercholesterolemia, a condition that causes their
bodies to produce an excessive amount of cholesterol (Statins safe, 2004). Left untreated, this condition is associated with having a myocardial infarction in early adulthood. A Dutch study that involved
a cohort of 214 children, ages 8-18, with familial hypercholesterolemia were prescribed pravastatin for 2 years. The children who took the statin drug lowered their LDL levels of cholesterol by
an average of 57 points (Statins safe, 2004). Ultrasound testing indicated that this had the effect of decreasing the thickness of their carotid arteries by about 10 micrometers and
