the United States has been a topic of concern, possessing the traditional pros and cons, for several years. While there are people who claim that drug testing in the workplace
is ineffective and perhaps even a violation of an individuals rights, there are many others who would well argue that drug testing in the workplace ensures that the workplace is
a safer place for all. The following paper examines the issues and illustrates how and why drug testing in the workplace can help decrease work injuries as well as result
in a workplace that is safer and more productive. Drug Testing in the Workplace While it appears that the reason most companies began drug testing in the first
place was because of the Federal governments War on Drugs, the reason many companies appear to be doing away with drug testing is the cost (Holding, 2006). "Despite the growing
demand for drug tests in sports and other fields, the percentage of employers with testing programs has dropped steadily since 1996, from 81% to 62% in 2004, according to the
American Management Association, which sees the trend continuing" (Holding, 2006). While drug testing is not incredibly expensive, costing approximately $25-$50 a person, it seems that there are so few individuals
coming up "dirty" that the cost of the process is not effective (Holding, 2006). However, one must clearly stop and consider, with or without any proper statistics, that the
cost of the testing may well strongly outweigh the costs of possible accidents and less production in the workplace. If companies do away with drug testing and even just a
