Too often these addictions are associated with criminal acts and, as might be expected, these acts are punished via imprisonment. Unfortunately, imprisonment does nothing towards addressing the underlying
problem of drug addiction. A most advantageous approach to dealing with addicts would be rehabilitation. Some individuals that use drugs do so
in the search for pleasure or the relief of pain, stress, tension or depression. Others do so as a result of peer pressure or in the pursuit of religious,
mystical, or social experiences or to enhance physical performance. A common element accompanying much of this use, however, is criminal activity. Addicts put themselves in a position of
being physically dependent on a drug that they cannot legally obtain. Consequently, they obtain this drug on the streets. The costs of illicit drugs are not only high
monetarily, they are high societally. Everyone suffers either directly or indirectly because of the problem of addiction. Illicit drug use
also has a very important influence on economics. That use lines the pockets of those selling the drugs and drains the pockets of those buying. Incentives exist for
each of these groups. For one group the economic incentives are a positive factor in promoting drug use, for the user there is satisfaction that is intense enough to
make them spend money even when they have to resort to criminal activity to obtain that money. Unfortunately, there is a very real
relationship between drug use and crime. Indeed, it might be contended that criminal behavior is directly related to the successes and failures involved in drug rehabilitation. Criminal behavior
