Drugs are Us, is faced with a dilemma. The migraine pain relief drug is already a raving success on the market, making the company a lot of money and the
shareholders very happy. The medical analyst has determined that there may some very averse effects of this new drug - over the long-term, prolonged use of the drug could lead
brain tumors. The medical analyst admits the tests are not conclusive and probably never will be but she suspects that a small number of people who use the drug for
20 years may develop brain tumors. Comprehensive testing will be extremely costly. The problem is what to do. If word of this possibility leaks to the general public, sales will
plummet. If the vice-president says anything to anyone, he will most likely lose his job. Many of the executive team, the research team and other employees will not be at
the company in twenty years so if this possibility were to be actualized, none of these people would be involved in the aftermath.Issues There are any number of issues involved in
this scenario. There is the moral issue of withholding information regarding a potential danger to customers. There are also significant legal issues and ramifications involved. The first question one would
want answered is: on what evidence is the medical analyst basing her conclusions? The migraine pain drug has only recently been introduced to the market. She does not have ten
years worth of research much less twenty so what where are the data coming from? Since this analyst has alleged the drug may cause brain tumors in a small percentage
of the users, what are the conditions that may lead to this result? Would patients have to have other conditions before the migraine medicine would affect them in this way?
