in every segment of the population and the "club" drug has found regular users. The desire to create artificial stimulation, to enhance physical experiences and heighten the senses are
all reasons individuals seek out MDMA. Like many other popular illegal drugs, including cocaine and acid, ECSTASY can produce a number of problematic health issues, from dependency to cardiovascular
impacts. Individuals seek out ECSTASY because it creates a sense of peacefulness, related to the impacts on sertonin production and regulation in the brain. Serotonin, the chemical
in the brain that regulates "appetite, sleep patterns, memory and moods" shifts through the influences of MDMA, initially triggering the brain to release its stores of serotonin (McCollum, 2002, p.
6). Because the stores are used, the down side of ECSTASY occurs later, when emotional changes, including depression, can result. Users
of MDMA often express the desire to use it during physical interactions, when it appears to increase a variety of physiological functions. The central problem with increasing physiological function
is that there are also other bodily functions that subsequently are heightened as well, including blood pressure and cardiac functions. Users of MDMA can take the drug in
a number of different fashions, depending on how quickly they want the drug absorbed in their blood stream. Like crack cocaine, MDMA can be injected or smoked, or can
be taken in pill form. One of the central problems with the use and abuse of MDMA is that individuals become acclimated to certain levels of the drug,
creating a level of tolerance to its effects. The more an individual takes, the less sensitive they are to the effects, creating the desire to take more and more
