country, had led to the need for international responses to the crimes they commit. Drug cartels are an expansive form of organized crime that have influence in many countries
and are involved in illegal operations in the United States. Latin American drug cartels are organizations developed along a patriarchal hierarchy in which participants focus on the development and
trafficking of drugs from Latin American countries into countries like the United States. Illegal drug sales in this country become the center of the cartels economy. Many of
these cartels participate in a range of activities, from international smuggling/trafficking of drugs, to activities designed to protect their interests. These can include bribery of national and international officials
and police, as well as acts of terrorism and murder designed to maintain their hierarchical control. In addition to the smuggling of drugs into the United States, drug cartels
also become involved in a range of other behaviors, designed to advance their interests. These can include paying for the involvement of rogue governments, drug and weapons trafficking, money
laundering and counterfeiting and even cybercrimes, all created to fund the organization (Dean, 2012). Drug cartels, like other system of organized crime, have participants at a variety of levels.
Cartel drug lords are the kingpins of the operation and dictate the kinds of activities that the cartel will participate in. Other high ranking officials in the organization
are responsible for overseeing the actions of the lesser players, including hitmen and drug distributors, who also often play a role in assessing the presence of threat to the business
