the university social and academic environments. Those individuals who are more inclined to become addicts have had a lifetime of family and peer influences to affect their behaviour. The more
negative influences on an individual, the more likely the person will rely on substance abuse. Likewise, an abuser also creates negative relationships with his or her family and peers and
uses irrational and psychotic behaviour when introduced into situations involving stress. It has been found that students who have a difficult time with stressful situations in university, have a lower
level of academic success. Drug Abuse History of medicine and psychology has proven that drug abuse effects and ruins individual lives and families and costs billions of dollars from
the U.S. economy each year. While there are various definitions of drug abuse, one simple definition was written by the American Social Health Association which basically said that drug abuse
is the "use of mood modifying chemicals outside of medical supervision, and in a manner which is harmful to the person and the community" (Abadinsky 2). [The student writer could
elaborate the description of a college campus as a community...] Major drugs used for addictions can be arranged in four categories: depressants, stimulants, hallucinogens and cannabis. Depressants depress the central
