Drug Abuse Resistance Education, the program most commonly referred to as D.A.R.E. targets kids in the classroom with information and strategies that can help keep them
drug free and living their lives free of violence and gangs. After the initial debut of D.A.R.E. in 1983 in Los Angeles, D.A.R.E. programs have been delivered all over
the nation and, in fact, around the world. D.A.R.E. programs are quite successful in accomplishing their goals. D.A.R.E. was implemented as an
address for the rampant drug problems that existed in Los Angeles schools starting with the sex drugs and rock n roll era that began in the 1960s. Drug in
Los Angeles schools only but that grew more and more prevalent through the 1970s and early 1980s. Astoundingly, by 1981 sixty-six percent of kids high school age or younger
had used drugs (D.A.R.E., 2009! D.A.R.E. recognized even in its earliest years that drug abuse wasnt, of course, limited to Los Angeles.
Indeed, it is and was a problem in practically any large urban area. The slums, ghettos, and red-light areas he explores are, in reality, quite similar to those we
encounter in Los Angeles and, in fact, the world over. An equally concerning problem, however, is kids from the suburbs. There are many similarities even between diverse locations.
