SOME REASONS DRUG ABUSE IS OCCURRING Research in both animals and humans has proven that crack cocaine is instrumental in causing birth defects in pregnant females. Women who have been studied as pregnant users of crack cocaine overwhelmingly demonstrate that premature delivery, low birth weight and retardation as three of the primary afflictions babies suffer. Childhood neurological problems that are directly related to crack cocaine use during pregnancy often mirror those of adult addicts, inasmuch as the drug has many of the same adverse effects on both the mother and the baby. It can then be argued that the adolescent is not necessarily in control of his or her own choices, often rendering them helpless to the influence of drugs (Weinberg 2001). For an adolescent just beginning to develop a sense of himself and his social significance, peer groups provide that measure of acceptance that every youth aspires to achieve. It can be argued that this aspect of social acceptance is even more crucial for individuals using drugs. These formations of like-minded and similarly aged teens represent the onset of adulthood in that they help to establish a pattern self-esteem and self-perception that will be carried on into adult years. Adolescence is considered one of the most crucial periods of socialization because of the very pressure it places upon the youth. There is a tremendous burden for teens to perform within their respective peer groups, whether that means to be cool, smart, pretty or popular.
