When the news reached America that our planes had dropped atomic
bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, many Americans applauded the action. The viewed it as a critical part of ending the war that had been raging for years. As time
has passed, a new view has emerged regarding the necessity of using this devastating weapon. Some contend it was not only unjustified, it was immoral and put the world
in a more precarious position than it had been before. These critics contend that the Cold War was just one of the negativities to result from these bombings.
The perilous insecurity that we feel in the contemporary world has also been blamed on the historic decision to use the A Bombs. The intent of this paper is
to explore those criticisms and to decide whether or not the A Bombs should have been dropped on that fateful day in World War II.
Numerous historians now contend that the A bombs actually had little to do with Japans decision to surrender. Hasegawa (2006), for example, contends that it was more
