Driving Miss Daisy is the subtlety with which Uhry develops the relationship between two such diverse characters, set against a background of social conflict during the civil rights movement. Some
critics have asserted that the chronology of the action (which spans twenty five years) can be confusing, especially in the film version of the play, but the lengthy time scale
is essential to the development of the two characters and their interaction with one another. It is, for example, not a play which traces the relationship of two people from
youth to old age, which would have been a much easier option for Uhry to take.
Instead, he opens the play with Miss Daisy in her seventies, strong character already decidedly well-formed, and very set in
her ways. She is a woman of highly independent spirit, as can be seen in her confrontations with her son over her driving - he is adamant that she is
no longer safe to be behind the wheel (and that the insurance company will feel the same way) but she is equally adamant that she will not "give herself airs"
by employing a chauffeur. Miss Daisy has strict ideas of what is right and proper, and having been brought up in Jewish social culture, where hierarchical relationships are important, she
does not wish to expose herself to ridicule or criticism by pretending to be something she is not.
