A newspaper editorial board is evenly divided on the issue of Great Lakes oil and gas drilling.
One member of the board is especially vocal about his stance that oil and gas drilling not be done. He might make his case as follows:
Drilling for oil and gas in the Great Lakes area is a mistake. Many agree that the potential
for disaster is incredible (Sims, 2001). However, people often do not realize this because it is a good idea. If new oil and gas can be found on the continent,
it would resolve some of the problems in respect to rising gas and oil prices. While that is true, some have also suggested that it will not make a significant
difference. Research has shown that 30 new wells would only yield enough oil for a three-week period and only provide enough natural gas for five weeks for state residents (Claiborne,
2001). That point alone is enough to render the expedition ridiculous. For just a temporary fix, a lot of risk would be taken.
One accident could conceivably contaminate drinking water for millions of people as well as to disrupt fishing, tourism and other business derived from the lake (Claiborne, 2001). The Great
Lakes region is a wonderful place and a moneymaker. Trying to cut oil and gas prices with a band-aid type fix is a losing proposition. Even if an accident does
