it can be a way of controlling people: think of the "hobble" skirts of women that were so tight at the ankles they literally had to hobble to walk. This
made them vulnerable but it also may have made their husbands and other men feel "protective" and strong. Womens clothing has been traditionally designed by men, and as such, it
is men who are setting the standards for what is considered fashionable for women to wear. It is men, in fact, who are by and large defining women. This paper
explores the issue of the way in which dress represents human sexuality in two works, Assaulted and Pursued Chastity by Margaret Cavendish, and The Taming of the Shrew by William
Shakespeare. Discussion Cavendish wrote slightly after Shakespeare, so the language in both is archaic to us. She describes her book essentially as a warning against women traveling alone, since they
might be taken advantage of by unscrupulous men. One virtuous young lady who is also unfortunately poor is sold by her unscrupulous hostess to a "Bawd is subject to unwelcome
attentions by a Prince, who not only dresses beautifully, but includes gorgeous clothes in his gifts to her. Thus he is using clothing both as a means of attracting her
by appearing well-dressed; he is also using clothing as a means to get her to surrender to him. The girl, who has fallen into the clutches of an older woman
whose function is suspicious (she seems like the madam of a whorehouse), is frightened but determined not to give in to the Prince, even though he is persistent. Most important
is the fact that the Prince is married; the girl says she would accept him in honorable marriage if he were free, but would not settle for less. He persists":
