United States. It is the story of two men trying to find their place, and their dream. In doing so they inadvertently pull others into their dream of owning a farm and having a small piece of land somewhere. During the Great Depression, which is when this story takes place, many people were displaced and found themselves wandering in the hopes of finding work and ultimately their dreams. However, at the same time they perhaps realized, as did the characters in the story, that they were dreams that would likely never be realized. The point was that it was the dreams that made life bearable. With this in mind the following paper examines the theme and significance of dreams in Steinbecks "Of Mice and Men." Dreams The two main characters in the story are George and Lennie. George is a fairly intelligent man who has dreams of owning land and being his own boss. He does not want much but he perhaps realizes that he will never achieve this dream in a land of such depression. This reality, of not achieving a dream, is further burdened by the fact that he has voluntarily taken it upon himself to be the caretaker of Lennie, a mentally disabled, though incredibly strong, man. Lennie is a simpleton and needs someone to protect him from ranch owners that would take advantage of his slow mentality. This burdens George but George is a decent and noble man who knows that Lennie needs someone, even if taking care of Lennie could mean the end of his dreams. Instead of just thinking that Lennie is a burden to his dreams he brings Lennie into the dream, giving Lennie a job in that dream. These dreams give the two something to focus on as a pair, ...
