in American life in such vivid detail that no other author has come close equaling him. This paper traces the themes of "dreams" and "authority" in the novel; how they
relate to each other and how they differ. It argues that the connection between dreams and authority is indirect, and that in most cases, authority works to block the fulfillment
of dreams. Discussion The book explores the "great American dream"-or does it? Gatsby has achieved it-or has he? The Great Gatsby continues to fascinate readers because it can be argued
that Fitzgerald shows what hard work can achieve at the same time that he castigates the mythology that created the "American dream" in the first place. At first glance, there
is little connecting these two concepts. But reflection reveals some threads between them, but they have to be teased out of the fabric of the book to be studied.
Gatsby, as noted, embodies the "American dream," which is generally understood to mean that anyone who is prepared to work hard and make sacrifices will, in the end, achieve success.
Cold reality has shown that this is actually a pretty threadbare idea, since hard work often begets nothing but more hard work and no success at all; that belongs to
the people who employ the hard workers. But the dream persists, and Gatsby seems to achieve it, because he has all the trappings of it: a huge mansion, gorgeous clothes,
a fine automobile, and what seem to be hundreds of friends. Except of course that theyre not friends at all but leeches, who come to eat his food, guzzle his
