truly dreamers. They are romantically inclined, although also clearly men. They desire the woman of their dreams and they both pursue a life that hopefully will result in their possession of that woman. The following paper examines who the greater dreamer is, Gatsby or Heathcliff. The paper ultimately chooses Gatsby as the greatest dreamer. Dreamers: Gatsby and Heathcliff Gatsby and Heathcliff aare both men who love a particular woman and know they cannot have that woman because they are poor. They both seek their fortune somewhere in the hopes of returning and then ultimately gaining the love of the woman through their success. Both men prove very successful, demonstrating their characteristics as dreamers, through diligent efforts to return as men of power and wealth. And each of them did this because of a dream. They were both driven by the same dream and they clearly devoted themselves to that dream. However, neither of them actually won the dream in the end. In the case of Heathcliff once he tells Catherine, when he sees her after several years of his being gone, and her having become married, " Ive fought through a bitter life since I last heard your voice; and you must forgive me, for I struggled only for you!" (Bronte Chapter X). But, he also begins to realize that he will never have her and his dreams seem to end. He marries and becomes an abusive and bitter man bent on revenge of one kind or another. This does not mean that he does not dream, but rather that his dreams have become overwhelmed with reality which has instilled in him a need for revenge.
