way then, this author makes a poignant contrast between dream and reality. The reality of Willys life is bleak and horribly ordinary, but the dream that Willy has fostered
his entire life is one of greatness and success. Unfortunately for Willy, these two paths never collide. He lives out his life never achieving his dreams.
Willy Lowman is a salesman, and a good one at that. But he is a man who plays life safe - perhaps too safe.
Unable to bring himself to take any kind of risk, Willy continues along the safe but predictable path of life never venturing outside of his comfort zone. Willy
is successful in garnering a safe life for himself, but that safety serves to trap him as well. Thus, Willy continuously battles between the reality of his life and
his dreams for his life. He has high hopes and big dreams but they are at constant odds with his reality and the choices he makes.
Therefore, Arthur Miller has provided the character of Willy as a means of illustrating the conflict that exists between the two polar opposites of dreams
and reality. Willy personifies a person who wants certain things from life but is his own biggest obstacle to obtaining them. The reality of Willy is entirely inconsistent
with Willy the Dreamer, and in this way Miller is trying to make the point that we can only be happy when these two aspects of ourselves are more in
