Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 4 page paper providing a study in whether dream recall can be influenced by providing pre-sleep suggestions. in dream research is that dreams cannot be controlled and that influencing them is doubtful. Stickgold (2000) comments on researchers attempts to explain the role of sleep in memory
and learning, concluding that "Researchers must trust the data more and the theories less, and build integrative rather than exclusionary models if they hope to resolve these knotty problems effectively"
(p. 1011). Kalb (1999) reports in the popular press on the research that seems to support Freuds dream theories, and Schredl (1998) reports on a study that "investigated the
stability and variability, respectively, of selected dream content measures" (p. 733). The most extensive discussion of attempts to influence dreams comes from Levitan
and LaBerge (1993), however. These researchers report on study findings suggesting that there is evidence that it is possible to influence dreams by "selecting the setting or topic of
the dream prior to sleep. The student writing on this topic should note that this is akin to the idea of dream incubation in which a person works to induce
a dream about an important topic in order to answer a question or resolve a conflict" (Levitan and LaBerge, 1993). An important qualification of this ability to influence dreams
is that the influence in topic remains separate from sequence or outcome. "Success with creating a particular dream setting, however, does not imply the ability to control the sequence
of events in the dream" (Levitan and LaBerge, 1993). This study seeks to test this belief. The hypothesis is that suggestions that
the student researcher makes to study subjects each night immediately preceding sleep will be able to influence subsequent dream recall. Methods The study
