putting children in groups where they can play and perform in a somewhat structured environment they can stand to learn many valuable things. And, as such it is perhaps the
perfect medium for teaching children spiritual values, even if they are not of any particular religious background. The following paper examines the method of engagement in the dramatic arts, as
it relates to the students assignment with their group of fifth graders, and examines what can be learned and taught. Dramatic Arts The engagement method of presenting the
dramatic arts is known as part of the creative teaching methods. In engagement method the players are essentially engaged into acting about things that matter to them, or things they
can relate to. In engaging them they will consciously, as well as subconsciously, learn about themselves, emotions they may have hidden away, and hopes and fears they may possess. Sometimes
words are difficult to come by and by using the engagement method of dramatic play the children can find different ways to express themselves. If the student is working with
children who are Christian then they can clearly use Biblical stories, aspects of the stories, to further teach children about their own spirituality. This is something suggested in the work
of Peter Pitzele, "Scripture Window." For example, the group of fifth graders could be given the story of the Good Samaritan wherein they could incorporate the story into modern times,
with perhaps a bum on the street, or a disabled child in school. It allows the children to put the Bibles stories into real perspectives and teach them something about
their world and themselves. If the children are taken into the dramatic play from a secular perspective Biblical themes can still be utilized. For example, the student requesting this
