the Western world regards the theater was first formulated by Aristotle (Carlson, 2004). While "comedy" has come to mean a play whose main purpose is to make the audience
laugh, in the medieval period, "comedy" merely indicated a play that had a happy ending. As this suggests, it has been typical for comedies, throughout the long history of theater,
to encompass serious questions of life, that is, "drama," along with providing the surprise of recognition that generally associated with the human response of laughter. In other words, in comedies,
such as Neil Simons The Sunshine Boys, there are comedic elements, but also there is the pathos of drama, as the play deals with the problems and obstacles presented by
old age. The play deals with two aging vaudevillian comedians, Willie Clark and Al Lewis, who were known professionally as "Lewis and Clark" or "the Sunshine Boys." The main
plot is that the two men are reunited in order to perform in a television salute to vaudeville. However, their reunion dramatizes the basic animosity between the two personalities. Also,
Willie is still angry because Al suddenly retired eleven years earlier, breaking up the act and, with it, his professional identity. Since their breakup, Willie has found it very difficult
to find work. He lives a shabby existence in an run-down hotel. Willies only living relative is his nephew Ben, who shoulders a great deal of responsibility as Willies primary
