they did not all blatantly protest the war. Activists like Abbie Hoffman burned their cards; Hoffman was actually classified as 4F anyway as he had asthma (Raskin 111). Tom Cornell
saw the draft card as more symbolic and claimed that it was a sacrament so that burning it would be equated with a blasphemy against the state (Raskin 111). Everyone
had different opinions about draft dodging. While the visible and vocal ones perhaps made headlines, there were many young people behind the scenes making their own waves. Draft card burning
was characteristic of the 1960s, but it was nothing new. During the 1940s, pacifists would burn their draft cards or mail them back to the draft boards (Friedland 158). Yet,
during the Second World War, the draft was not largely opposed. Vietnam was an unpopular war. In any war, there are protesters, but when a war is thought to be
wrong, much more draft dodging is seen. That is what happened in Vietnam. Yet, as people burned their draft cards in the states, there were young boys dying in the
jungles of Vietnam (Stone, 472). Hence, many people did not favor the acts of the young people. The country was divided and there were various movements around at the time.
To avoid going to war, some boys decided to go to college. Yet, for certain patriots, doing so was tantamount to desertion. Some claim that accepting a college deferment was
the same thing as draft dodging (Wiest 77). Wiest notes: "Throughout the Vietnam War everyone knew what a draft-dodger was, and it wasnt some guy going to college" (77). Draft
