Type of sampling method used The sampling method was basically stratified sampling insofar as Dr. Zak left the questionnaires at each residence and residents did or did not complete the form through their own volition. Dr. Zak was investigating depression among college students. It would make sense to either leave surveys in classes or in the dorms. There was just one population, college students (Cohen and Swerdlik, 2009, p. 112). This population is also convenient for Dr. Zak. With any research, the researcher is constrained by time and money. Dr. Zak used the population to whom she had access but students completed the questionnaire voluntarily. The sample is not good enough. Norms can not be determined because of a number of variables. The most significant factor is the great disparity between the numbers of men and women, 70 percent women and 30 percent men. When one population is so much larger, a researcher can not determine norms. The test only has five questions. An answer of yes to the first four indicates depression, an answer of no on the last question means depression. Dr. Zak calculated a mean score of 1.5, which is at the low end of the scale and would be considered the norm. A standard deviation of 0.5 would suggest that the normal range for test takers would be 1.0 to 2.0. This range would suggest the test taker is not depressed.
