gets to school she stops for a quick drink at the fountain before heading to her first class of the day; African American history. Sandra doesnt know it but she
is about to learn about one of the men most responsible for her freedom today; Dr. William Edward Burghardt Dubois. Dead for more than 30 years Duboiss still touches hundreds
of thousands of African Americans today with his literary publications. Seemingly born a generation to early in 1968; ( Jet 1995: 19) Dubois was a radical in his day. Without
promoting violence he taught the nations African Americans they deserved to go to school, buy homes in neighborhoods of their choice and publish great literary works.
As we watch desegregation fall apart at the seams we remember the lessons Dubois taught. He wanted to achieve racial equality but he never implied it was so
black children could "copy" white ones. Dubois believed all men were created different but equal. Capable in their own right. (Conyers, James L. Jr. 1997: 117)
Dubois dedicated his life to the study of African issues. He searched the world over and drew from many ideas to try and end the problems for African Americans
worldwide. He led by example becoming the first black man to attain many goals, including a doctorate from Harvard University. (Conyers, James L. Jr. 1997: 117) Known as
one of the greatest intellectual minds of all time in any race he had a vision and spent his life working to see it come to fruition. Three decades after
he died the US is still struggling with how to put it all together but Dr. Dubois was instrumental in teaching us it had to be done.
