memorable story lines from the lovable Dr. Seuss series, Theodor Seuss Geisel applied his talent towards illustrating the many wrongs inherent in World War II. As an editorial cartoonist
Geisel devoted his time to depicting Nazis and Fascism in a way that created just as indelible of memories in his adult readers as his later more entertaining exploits into
the world of cartoons would produce for generations of young readers. His cartoons, while not always a reflection of public sentiment as a whole surrounding the war, are certainly
a reflection of some of the more politically in tune thinkers in American society at the time. They were also definitely a reflection of Geisels personal sentiments.
History tells us, of course, that Americans were initially gung ho about entering a war thousands of miles away. Anyone who in any way
aided or condoned the horrors leading up to World War II or even who suggested that staying out of the war was best for us as a country was subject
to being targeted by Dr. Seusss pen. Americans who sympathized with the fascists and Nazis were just as vulnerable to Seusss satire as the Fascists and Nazis were themselves.
So too were those that thought this should remain a European affair. Americas slowness in coming to a decision to enter the war during the initial years was
certainly a sore point with Geisel. In many ways the characters that Geisel utilized in his editorial cartoons are reminiscent of those he
would later use in the Dr. Seuss books. Consider the goateed bird-like creature bedecked with a USA top hat bemoaning his fate in the cartoon captioned "Stop wringing the
