The educational process would be "child-centered" and was considered quite controversial when introduced and still remains controversial today as it is unlike most traditional "teacher-centered" educational approaches. She found that the secret of childhood was that when children were left to their own devices in a supportive setting that they tended to "normalize" themselves to their environment and took on a self-discipline approach to maximize their own intellectual development. Maria Montessori, born in Ancona, Italy in 1870 became Italys first family physician and developed the educational philosophy that still bears her name today. There were several secrets she learned about childhood and most importantly that children learned best by doing, not listening (Stewart, 2001). She also found that if children were taught in multi-age classes, they could also learn from each other. One of the most important stages in the learning process took place between the ages of three to six when children have "the absorbent mind" and educators should capitalize on this (Stewart, 2001). Montessori education stresses that education should be "child-centered" instead of the traditional method of "teacher-centered". The theory of Montessori has remained much the same as when she opened her first school in Rome in 1907 serving four to seven year olds from low income families. The schools began opening up in the United States in 1910. In the 1920s however, because of their clashing theories with the American education experts, notably John Dewey, the number of Montessori schools decreased at that time (Stewart, 2001). During her research in the early 1900s, Dr. Maria Montessori studied the childs true nature.
