he wants, but his life is measured, and when he dies, he goes to hell. Dr. Faustus had used magic to create this unsavory world. Many people would be shocked when Faustus revealed what was going on, but he took his deal in stride. He was able to get what he wants, and the magic would work not only to conjure the devil, but also to get Faustus the things of which he dreamed. Some might contend that leadership or political power is not so far off from the magic that Faustus leveraged. After all, it seems as if power, when used for negative purposes, can yield a sort of living hell on earth. Interestingly, a book written by Machiavelli (1997) called The Prince, does not contain magic, but does contain a prescription for how princes should act. That is, if someone wants to be powerful, they need only follow the words in this volume. On some level, power and magic can be compared as ways to manipulate the public. In Dr. Faustus, the protagonist is able to manipulate his way into situations where he is with royalty. In The Prince, there are directions on how to rule. On some level, both works are associated with royalty, power, and leadership. In Dr. Faustus, it is magic that leads the protagonist to a rich and powerful life. In The Prince, the leaders are provided with the tools to rule properly. Yet, those tools are really things that provide one with greater power, and on some level, the power equated with what princes have and what Dr. Faustus has, is something one may perceive as magic.
