born with Downs Syndrome have a very unique appearance that is recognizable. Not all mental handicaps can be identified through a look, but Downs Syndrome individuals can almost always be
spotted. However, a person who is born with Downs Syndrome is not necessarily an individual who is drastically mentally handicapped. The following paper examines Downs Syndrome, where and why it
occurs, and how individuals with Downs Syndrome can often live independent lives like many other "normal" people. Downs Syndrome "Down syndrome is a genetic condition that causes delays
in physical and intellectual development" (NADS, 2005). It takes place in approximately one out of every 800 births. A person with Downs Syndrome has 47 chromosomes instead of the normal
46 (NADS, 2005). Downs Syndrome is caused when an error occurs in natural cell division during fetal development (NADS, 2005). It is not known what causes the condition but is
know that as the age of the mother increases the chances of her having a Downs Syndrome child increase. (NADS, 2005). Interestingly enough, women who are 35 and older are
routinely asked if they want a test, an amniocentesis, which will test for Downs Syndrome, even though "80% of children with Down syndrome are born to women under 35 years
of age" (NADS, 2005). This is perhaps due to the fact that women under the age of 35 give birth more often than those over 35 and that when one
reaches 35 and over the risk increases. People born with Downs Syndrome can vary greatly in the amount of brain damage that occurs because of the condition. Some individuals
