a mirror to many circumstances and times where the human spirit was corralled and oppressed to the point that it might even appear to have been annihilated. World War
II and the years following is an excellent example of one of these times. Because of the intensity of its impact to humanity, World War II has been immortalized
in numerous formats. So too have periods in world history like that bracketing the corruption characterizing East German Communism and the German Democratic Republic, the period preceding the dismantling
of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Among the most moving of the formats depicting these periods is film. Films like "Downfall", "The Lives of Others", and "Judgment at
Nuremberg" provide insight into history as no other media format has yet to manage. They graphically depict the true intensity of the oppression this period represented for so many.
They also provide numerous character portrayals that make interesting comparisons in regard to the concepts of consciousness and free will. Some would
contend that the oppression that characterized World War II was so great that human conscience is actually extinguished (Funder, 2004). Others, like A. O. Scott in his review of
"The Lives of Others", however, contend that "even in an oppressive society, individuals are burdened with free will." Free will does in fact persist throughout even the most horrendous
chapters of World War II and the following years. Characters like Captain Gerd Wiesler (The Lives of Others) and Mrs. Magda Goebbels (Downfall) stand in example of this fact.
Both Captain Wiesler and Mrs. Goebbels exercise their free will under oppressive circumstances yet with very different outcomes. In one
