Introduction Down syndrome results from a chromosomal anomaly. Instead of a child having the normal twenty chromosomes there is a twenty-first chromosome
that manifests either in whole or in part. The condition is found more frequently in children that are born to older mothers. The condition results in both physical
and cognitive abnormalities. Children with Down syndrome typically have unusual facial characteristics that are suggestive of those of the Asiatic races.
These facial features include almond shaped eyes, eyefolds, and an overall rounded face with a small chin. Down syndrome children were once called Mongoloids because of these facial
characteristics. The term Mongoloid, however, is now considered offensive by many and the condition is most correctly known as Down syndrome in recognition of John Langdon Down, the physician
that first described the condition in the mid nineteenth century. There are several other physical characteristics found in those
with Down syndrome. In addition to the facial features noted above, Down syndrome children have oversized and even protruding tongues, and short arms and legs. Less prominent features
include a Simian crease in the palms, poor muscle tone, and a larger than normal space between the big toe and the toe next to it. Cognitively, Down syndrome
